Unconditional Love is Intelligent Love

Spirit tells me that unconditional love
is intelligent love.

But, isn’t love an emotion?

Yes.

And, doesn’t intelligence require
intellect?

Yes.

Then, is unconditional love a blend
of intellect and emotion?

No.

Please explain.

What?

How unconditional love …

Expresses intelligence?

Yes.

Do we love whom we do only when
their behaviour pleases us?

No.

Why?

We choose to overlook imperfections.

Yes.

What does that mean?

You answered your own question.

How?

Choice requires decision-making,
and that requires intellect.

So, unconditional love does not
negate or excuse unlovable
behaviour, but chooses to love
regardless.

Yes.

We Develop Abusive Habits

A Spirit Teacher shares His understanding of timeless wisdom
as it applies to human nature in every situation and in every
culture; past, present, and future.

How can wisdom be timeless?

Because human nature is also timeless, in that it is grounded
in emotion.

That may be true, but …

It is true.

How does timeless wisdom apply to abusive behaviour.

Timeless wisdom inspires healthy emotions, thoughts, and
actions. Abuse of others or self is neither healthy nor
life-sustaining.

Should we forgive those who abuse us?

How can abuse be forgiven? That would be an unhealthy
response. What good purpose would it serve? None at all.
In fact, it might even encourage more abuse.

Abuse, He tells me, is unhealthy behaviour regardless of
who is abusing whom, or even whether the one being abused
accepts ill treatment. That would express self-abuse.

How then can we respond in a healthy way to abuse when
we can’t protect ourselves from it?

We make choices and perhaps past choices helped to create
the abusive situation.

Why do you speak of an abusive situation and not of
an abusive person?

There are none.

Please explain.

We develop abusive habits or we don’t.

An an addiction?

Yes.

Why Do We Do What We Do?

Spirit tells me that our personal behaviour
either serves us well or it doesn’t. But, if
it does not then it must have served us well
at some time in the past, or at least we
must have believed that it did.

What if it just seemed appropriate at a
particular time?

There are no particular times for specific
behaviours.

Why?

All behaviours have a history.

What about spontaneity?

What about it?

If moving out of the way to avoid an
accident that never happened before, then
how could that reflex action have a history.

How could it not?

Because it never happened before.

To you, perhaps, but you would be aware
of a possible outcome for not moving
out of the way.

Perhaps I intuitively knew.

Yes, and intuition is a built-in history book.

A history of what?

Of how to live.

Why do we do what we do when we do it?

Spirit asks me if I know why I behave the way I do.

When?

At any given time.

That depends.

On what?

On the situation.

Have you designed a specific beahavioral response for any given situation?

I don<t think so.

Then, what?

I respond as seems appropriate, at least for me.

Then different people might respond differently to the same situation?

I guess so.

Why?

Perhaps they have learned different coping strategies.

How?

I suspect you know more about this than I do.

Yes. We each began to develop general coping strategies in early childhood,
in response to personal experience. We learned, through practice and
experiment, what behaviours seemed to serve us well in different
situations. These we added to our tool kit of coping skills. With
use they developed into habits that may no longer serve us as well as
they once did.

Then we need to become more flexible in our response.

Yes, and more aware of what triggers our particular responses.

That would require paying attention to our behaviour.

Yes, with intent to adapt to changing circumstance.

Such as?

Our progress along the path of enlightenment.

Practice is habit with a purpose

Spirit tells me that practice is habit, but an intentional one,

With a goal, and requires intent to improve or maintain

What we have developed in skills or in establishing

A way of life.

Practice can result in patterns of behaviour; physical, intellectual,

Emotional and, or spiritual that may appear to some others to be

No more than habits.

There is also the danger, He cautions, of practice becoming

No more than a habit, when intention is no longer involved.

How can I be sure that I still have intention?

Are you satisfied?

No.

Are you still making progress?

Yes, but …

Even a little is more than none.

Habits can become Addictions

Spirit tells me that habits are consciously developed

Patterns of behaviour or self-discipline with, or

Without intent to integrate them into one’s way of life.

Habits can serve a useful purpose in preparing for

Competitions, exams, performances, goals, etc., or

Just to maintain a chosen lifestyle.

Habits can also become addictions, when they no

Longer serve any useful purpose in one’s life, but

At some point in time the habit has taken control

Over will power.

I sense a question coming.

Yes. Which am I?

You are my teacher.

Then I still serve a useful purpose in your life?

You know the answer to that.

Yes.

Over will power.

How we live develops patterns

Spirit suggests that I become increasingly aware of

The patters of thought, emotion, and behaviour that

I am developing.

How we live each lifetime is important, He tells me,

Not just for this particular lifetime but also for how

It will influence future lifetimes.

How we respond to any challenge that Life

Presents us with affects and is affected by

The individual patterns of thought, emotion, and

Behaviour that we have developed.

These lifestyle patterns; for they are styles among

Countless other styles, tend to become habitual

Ways of responding, or reacting, to whatever.

Our thoughts and emotions, He tells me, are

Different types of energies that harmonize, or

Do not. How we understand and respond to

Experience expresses both thought and emotion.

Spirit asks me to become increasingly aware that

My individual energies and how well they harmonize

With each other will, does, affect everyone and

Everything in my life, Himself included.

What an awesome responsibility.

Yes.

Neither Pen nor Ink am I

Spirit tells me that I am neither the pen nor the ink

<Through which His teachings flow.

I am a channel, as is everyone else, more or less.

Whatever anyone of us can say, do, think, or feel

Has been said, done, thought or felt before,

Or might have been.

“Monkey see, monkey do” describes learned behaviour and

Human behaviour is learned behaviour, except for that which is

Instinctive and universal. No emotions are unique.

What is unique, Spirit claims, is our individual blend.of

Universal attributes and potentials, and our more or

Less unique chosen way of expressing these.

We each choose and practice behaviours, thoughts,

Skills, and language, that we have learned from

Others. We feel Universal emotions but we each

Express these in our own way, more or less.

The difference between our relationship and

That of some others, He tells me, is that He has

Chosen to channel his teachings through me,

After having prepared me; trained me, more or

Less, and taught me enough to make it possible

To use me. But, even that would not be enough

If I (me) did not choose to serve as his student and

Channel. It takes two.

I had to learn before I could do, as it is with

Everyone who ever learned to do anything.
