Wind over Water – I Ching 53

jeanw5's avatarI Ching as a Way to Enlightenment

Spirit explains:

Wind moves over, around, under, or through whatever would block its way. It is in its nature to move, without regret, permission, or desire to accomplish anything other than to fulfill its nature to move.

That may be normal behaviour for winds, but what about people?

What about them?

Surely we need to think about what we are doing, why we are doing it, and what we hope to accomplish by doing it?

Why?

How can we not use our mind?

Yes.

What Happens Next?

With this final post of the year 2014 I must share with you my gratitude, not only to my sometimes difficult Spirit teacher, but also to Cheng Yi for his interpretation of the ancient classic I Ching, The Book of Change, and to Thomas Cleary for his translation. Spirit uses this text as a reference point, or general framework, within which he expounds his own understanding of the relevance this ancient wisdom has for today’s so-called modern society. Also, I give thanks to you, for following.

A spirit teacher shares His I Ching wisdom with me.

Today’s focus is on the life situation expressed by
Hexagram 18 – Degeneration.

Mountain is over Wind. Yang is over Yin.

And yet, Wind is a restless yin, not easily …

Controlled?

Yes.

Mountain is steadfast. It doesn’t seek control.

It is blocking the way.

Wind is able to move around the mountain.

So, we can each stand firm, without intent to block
others, who can if they wish to, do their own thing
without our approval or co-operation?

Yes. We each are responsible to ourselves and to our
own higher purpose; to remain firm, without seeking
to direct others, who may choose to follow a path of
their own.

Why is such a situation described as degeneration?
This name seems to suggest …

The end of a period of growth?

Yes.

Because it is.

Then, where do we go…

And Still A Long Way To Go

jeanw5's avatarGrass-Roots Spiritual Philosophy 101

Our simple seeker was reading Alan Seale’s
“Create a World That Works”.

How can that be done?

It is being done.

By whom?

By everyone.

And everything?

Yes.

How are we doing it?

Simply by being.

Being what?

No what necessary.

What does that mean?

What might it mean?

Is being the same as living?

In what way?

Existing.

How?

Just as we are.

We?

All of us.

No.

Then, what?

We each of us exist.

Separately?

No.

Then, what’s wrong with my using “we”?

It suggests one way.

Is there more than one way?

For what?

For each of us to exist.

Yes and no.

Please explain.

We each are as we each are, in a continuous
process of becoming.

Becoming what?

We can never become a what.

Then, becoming whom?

We are now whom we are.

Then, whom are we?

We each are we.

One?

Yes.

Some Can Recognize Detour Signs

jeanw5's avatarI Ching as a Way to Enlightenment

Spirit shares I Ching wisdom.

Today’s focus is on Hexagram 28 – Great Surpassing.

How does one greatly surpass?

What?

Anything.

Or anybody?

Oh!

Yes, we greatly surpass those whom we do.

For whatever reason?

No.

We have a reason to go beyond?

Yes and no.

Please explain.

We go beyond where we once were, not necessarily
to pass another, but ourselves.

Great Surpassing follows Nourishment (27). Why?

Something has fed our need to move on.

Experience?

Yes.

But, the same experience doesn’t seem to have
the same effect on everyone.

Inspiration …

Inspiration is an experience?

Yes.

And we each respond to experience,
or inspiration, in our own unique way?

Yes. It is the same as with food.

Please explain.

If we allow our natural taste for specific foods
to become corrupted by a desire to please others,
then our socially conditioned body’s response to
specific foods will influence…

Co-operation Is Mutually Beneficial

jeanw5's avatarI Ching as a Way to Enlightenment

Spirit shares I Ching wisdom.

Wisdom, awareness and enlightenment each reflect
the other two, from a unique perspective.

Our current position, along the path through life,
which we have chosen, more or less, is expressed by
the I Ching Hexagram 50 – The Cauldron.

Fire is over Wind, creating heat as fire and wind
co-operate with each other.

This situation of working together to achieve
a common goal develops out of Revolution (49).
Revolutions are necessarily violent confrontations
of differing goals, as expressed by Water over Fire,
a mutually destructive situation.

Why do we seek to improve our relationships
after the battle?

The battle serves a socially useful purpose.

What purpose?

Mutual respect.

How is that possible if the revolution is successful?

Revolutions are never successful, except …

Except what?

Except when.

When they result in a change in power?

No. That would only result in a change at the…

Sharing As Connective Tissue

Spirit tells me that the many qualities of love are more real than I am. It doesn’t make me feel very real.

jeanw5's avatarGrass-Roots Spiritual Philosophy 101

Our simple seeker was meditating on the thought
of who and whom trading places.

How does it work? What would it look like?

It’s you and me when we interact. I am here
and you are there, but only from my personal
perspective. From your perspective it would
be the reverse.

Why are we separated?

Isn’t that just the way it is?

No.

Then, what?

We are as connected as we each care to be.

As we choose to be?

No.

Then what?

As we each care to be.

What if we don’t or didn’t know each other?

It would still be the same

How can we care to be connected to someone …

To everyone, and everything.

How?

We each are more connected to each other
than anyone is aware of being.

Is that a structural concept of oneness?

Oneness is more than a concept. It is reality.

A…

The Slippery Slope Of Small Excess

Anything unnecessary to life can become an addiction. I enjoy a teaspoon of brown sugar on my morning cereal. Spirit suggests that I am as any addict. I’ll accept the risk.

jeanw5's avatarI Ching as a Way to Enlightenment

Spirit shares I Ching wisdom.

The experience we now focus on is represented by
the sixty-first Hexagram – Sincerity, expressing
self-awareness. This is not simplicity.

Awareness of oneself can only develop in harmony
with awareness of others, and to expect everything
and nothing of everyone other than self, but,
to expect from self the best that we have; that
we are.

And so, it makes sense that Sincerity follows
Discipline. Self-discipline is a necessary
prerequisite to a satisfied mind.

But, why does Sincerity lead to Small Excess
(Hexagram 62)?

What is small excess?

Brown sugar on my porridge.

Why is it so?

It’s not a nutritional necessity.

Then why do you do it?

A teaspoon of brown sugar seems to give
my cereal a more appealing taste.

Yes.

Then, simple personal pleasures are acceptable
forms of small excess?

Yes, until they become more than just a simple
pleasure.

Wouldn’t simple…

There is No Way to Spirituality; It is The Way

There are times when Spirit seems to be incredibly awesome, as well as highly enlightened; and then there are other times.
He has his way; and now I understand more clearly that we each also have our own unique way of learning and relating, and, with him, teaching. I am blessed to have been chosen, perhaps for my simplicity, to assist Spirit in sharing His teaching with anyone who cares to read our posts.

jeanw5's avatarGrass-Roots Spiritual Philosophy 101

Our simple seeker was meditating on the spiritual concept
of “The Way”. She had always, it seems, found the term
problematic.

What’s the problem with it?

“The way to go” can refer to a direction.

It is a direction.

But, it can also refer to how to live; as in a power
tripper insisting it be her way.

Or his?

I didn’t want you to consider it as personal.

It is personal.

I could have also meant power-trippers in general.

Also suggests the personal was included.

Okay. Yes, but you do sometimes …

Only sometimes?

I’m learning a new way of coping with your way?

How?

Yes. Exactly. Your way, as how you would or do
whatever; your style.

And the results?

It makes it so much less of a struggle; so much
less stressful.

In what way?

Even individual children develop their own way,
their own style, of learning.
