How to Live and Why

Spirit shares gems of wisdom.

Spirit tells me that to live in such a way that brings
a sense of satisfaction and pleasure requires us
to seek to serve others, because in serving others
we also serve ourselves.

Survival of oneself depends upon survival of others
and upon the survival of the environment which
sustains us all.

But, He continues, we cannot care for anyone if we
do not first care for ourselves, because if we have
no love for ourselves then we have no love to share
with anyone or anything else.

It’s as simple as that.

Messengers and Teachers

Spirit shares gems of wisdom with me. Why? I don’t know,
but I’m glad he does.

He tells me that I’m not the one who’s directing His
traffic, nor is He directing mine, except …

Except what?

Not what, but how and why? We each serve a higher
purpose than our own.

I’m free, He tells me, to choose to listen to Him
and the teachings that He would share with me,
or not to listen. He’s a messenger and the teachings
He shares with me, for whatever reason, are far
beyond a one-to-one personal correspondence. they are
also meant for whomever cares to hear them and to
consider their value. They were never, He repeats,
designed for me, alone.

Why me at all?

You seemed to be ready.

Can you be both a messenger and a teacher of the
messages you share with me?

Is a teacher not as a messenger to his or her
students?

Yes. I see. The teacher must first have received
the messages she or he now shares with students.

Yes.

To serve only oneself is impossible.

Spirit shares words of wisdom.

Spirit tells me that it’s impossible to serve only oneself.
We are, each and every one, too interconnected for that
to be possible.

What if I catch my own fish, grow my own vegies and fruit,
and drink water from my own well?

None of that would be available to serve your needs
if others had consumed, destroyed, or contaminated
what you would otherwise enjoy.

Why would anyone do that?

Why would they not?

It would be self-destructive.

Yes.

Learning to Understand Life

Spirit asks me if I would wish anyone else to share

Such a relationship as we seem to.

The answer to that one is easy, and simple.. No.

I would not wish for anyone the stress of the strugggle

I experience, with no end in sight.

Why do you continue?

I’m not aware of any option. Besides, I seem to

Need to hold on as long as I can.

Why?

There could be some reward, and perhaps

Learning is its own reward.

What are you learning?

To understand life.

What have you learned so far?

That it’s still a mystery, to me.

Yes.

Do you try to look?

Spirit asks me if I can understand why whatever is

Happening is happening, before I am aware that

Whatever is happening is happening?

I protest. Something is always happening.

Yes.

Then what should I do?

You could practice understanding why what has

Happened has happened, even while you practice

Being aware of what now is happening.

I try.

Do you try to look?

Memory of a Summer Morning

I sat in contemplation, among my much-loved potted vines, shrubs, perennials and colourful annuals that surrounded me, or reached down to attract my attention and appreciation of their beauty. And they were beautiful, each in their own way. Did they know that they provided me with much more than pleasure, or at least pleasure and more? Their profuse foliage screened me from the world, or so it seemed.

The day began, or at least that portion of it when I took coffee, water, books, pen and notebook out to meditate – not every meditator focuses on her navel, or emptiness.

It was a misty, moist morning and yet, even as I recorded this fact, the reality changed. A flat, transparent, almost soft grey blanket of cloud, giving a faint hint of blue sky beyond, gradually transformed itself into a soft, lace stretching across a baby-blue sky. The cloud lace stretched ever more thinner and became tattered, as a beloved old shawl might seem to be by strangers.

I asked Green Maple, close to my patio, and his young friend, Red Maple, what they thought of such a transformation in the sky.

We don’t think at all, they seemed to smugly respond. or, at least we try not to. What purpose would it serve? We accept what is. Why don’t you?

Why don*t I just accept?

Yes.

It’s not possible, at least not for me, not if acceptance is as , case closed. I just can’t seem to be able to do it. I can accept almost anything, if acceptance is a step that requires developing understanding of why, and even then, why, too, must lead somewhere toward progressing beyond even awareness of the why, to a ‘where do I go from here’ question.

Spirit is listening to all of this and suggests that I could learn to live a simple life.

How is that possible, I ask, when Life refuses to be simple?

He drops the pen. Our connection closes. Why?

No response.
