Beneath The Surface of Doing and Thinking

Spirit asks me if I am conscious.

Of what?

Of anything.

I’m conscious of being asked if I’m conscious.

That’s not the same thing.

The same thing as what?

Of being conscious.

As in being aware?

Of what?

Then, to be conscious is to be aware?

Of what?

Of whatever.

Of whatever what?

Of whatever is happening that I’m conscious or aware of.

Yes.

What does that mean?

It means that you use two words to mean the same thing.

Why not?

When you use awareness or consciousness, why do you
give awareness a higher social status position
in your spiritual reading, writing, and thinking?

Perhaps they don’t mean exactly the same thing as
each other.

In what way?

You would know …

Yes, but do you?

I think so.

So?

Consciousness is possession of at least some capacity
to be aware of and understand what is happening
around me, while awareness is intentionally
conscious of what is happening, and attempting to
understand why my dear Spirit Teacher has chosen
to focus my attention on the difference or
differences between the meanings of consciousness
and awareness.

Do you think I have a purpose?

I know you have a purpose.

How do you know?

You always have a purpose.

Yes, but do you?

Is it possible to do or think about anything without
a purpose for doing so?

Why just do or think?

Without including emotions?

Yes.

I don’t know. Perhaps they’re somewhere beneath
the surface of everything we do or think.

Yes.

Unconditional Love is Always and Never Personal

Spirit tells me that unconditional love
is always and never personal.

Does that mean that to love anyone
unconditionally …

Yes. You must, at the same time,
be required to love everyone
and everything in the same, or
rather, to that same degree.

Wouldn’t it all become blah?

Blah?

Yes, as in nothing special.

Unconditional love is a very special
quality of love.

Would you want me to relate to you
in such a way?

Not at this time.

Why wouldn’t unconditional Love
be appropriate at all times?

It would not be either possible
or appropriate.

Please explain.

What? Unconditional love?

No. I think I understand what
that means.

What is your understanding of
the meaning of unconditional love?

Unconditional love is to love
without conditions required
to receive my love.

Required by whom or what?

How can it go beyond people?

How can that be a condition?

Then our environment is
and must be included in
my unconditional love?

Yes.

Then, the fallen petals or leaves
must be as loved as when
they were …

No. Unconditional loves does not
have a past or future.

It is always in the present?

Yes, an inclusive present.

How can the present include
past and future?

There are no boundaries of time
and place for unconditional love.

Then, unconditional love is always
or never?

Yes.

But, what if I have developed, and
even now am developing, a deeper
sense of the meaning of
unconditional love?

That is as it should be.

But, I didn’t always understand …

Unconditional love does not depend
upon your understanding.

It just is?

Yes.

Note: Dear Readers, This discussion with Spirit
only seems to skim the surface of the topic
of unconditional love, and yet I could feel
myself stepping into intellectual and emotional
waters over my head, for now. If any of you
have thoughts or questions I could present to Spirit
on the subject, then please help me.

We Each Know Everyone Else

Spirit tells me that there have always been
dedicated teachers of wisdom in every culture
since time began, who have shared their
understanding and awareness of how life
can be lived for the benefit of all.

But, there are surely many more ways than
one to live a life that benefits all,
if it was possible to know how the life
we live could harm anyone.

Awareness would teach you.

How to become aware?

Experience.

Experience of what?

Being harmed as a result of how others
live their lives.

It isn’t possible to know how all others
live their lives.

Why?

I don’t know all others.

Do you know yourself?

Yes, I think so.

Then you know everyone else.

Simplicity is Where Thinking Begins

Spirit tells me that Simplicity has its place
but it should not be as a quality of thought.

Is that a personal comment?

Yes.

Why do you not scold my simplicity of emotion?

What have your emotions to do with your thinking?

Is it possible to have deep thoughts and simple
emotions?

What have emotions to do with thinking?

You’re luring me into an intellectual trap.

Yes.

Then, pleas explain.

What?

The relationship between thought and emotion

They interact with each other.

As cause and effect?

Which would be cause?

Emotion.

No.

If thought does not act on emotion, then …

But, thought does act on emotion.

Then why do you say emotion does not
cause thought.

Because it isn’t necessarily so.

Then, interact in this case means …

Mutual influence.

How do they influence each other?

Some of us develop the capacity
to think rationally, while still
maintaining uncomplicated emotions.

Then you approve of simple emotions?

There are no other kind.

It Serves us Well to Remember

Spirit tells me that it serves us well
to remember the horror of tragic events
that might never have happened if …

If what?

If violence was not socially acceptable.

By whom?

By those who commit acts of violence.

How is that possible? Surely, for
whatever reason or reasons, surprise
attacks on thousands of unsuspecting
and unarmed people, as happened
on a day like today, not many years
ago, must have made sense to someone.

The attackers?

Perhaps they were persuaded by some
evil genius that what they were asked
to do was of value to a cause
that justified mass murder.

Yes.

Then, how can we create a world community
wherein such thinking is unthinkable?

We can only create such a community
with individuals who learn to care
for all other individuals.

Surely that is impossible.

Why?

We seem to need to come together
in small groups of people wherein
we each contribute our unique skills
for the benefit of the whole
community; our chosen community.

How would such a small community
be chosen?

Shared values.

And, how would you develop
shared values?

Education?

Yes, but education is never enough.

Then, what else?

This world, and every community,
large and small, within it, needs
individual role models, mentors,
teachers, care givers, and leaders
who understand why they were chosen
to lead.

Is it possible to create such
a world community?

Yes.

More is Less and Less is More

Spirit tells me that He understands my fear
that I might lose my own identity and become
consumed into His truth instead of being free
to discover my own.

It would be foolish not to be afraid, He assures me,
but not to risk that possible outcome, if it was
possible, would not be wise for someone like me.

He seems to know that His higher awareness has or is                                                                                            an irresistible temptation to me. I seem to very much                                                                                           want and need to learn from Him all that He can teach                                                                                          me about life and how it might be lived in service to                                                                                       Life itself without serving myself less.

He tells me that, at least in this case, and possibly
in all cases, more is less and less is more, depending
upon our focus.

Relationships as learning experiences

Spirit tells me that every relationship is a learning experience

In which each participant is both teaching and learning from

The relationship itself and from every participant, inclding

Oneself.

Deep or shallow? How far do we dare to go? To see deeply

Is to go deeply into the possible motives and intentions of

The other, or others, and to consider whether they are

Different from or similar to our own.

How far will each relationship take us if we allow, or invite it?

How will we change and how will the other, or others change?

And is it worth the effort, or risk?

All relationships either stimulate or drain our energy,

As well as affecting other resources, precious or otherwise.

Teacher, has our relationship been a learning experience for you?

Yes, it has taught me patience.

Accept as so what seems so

Spirit tells me that to accept people, situations, and relationships

As they are is not possible without first knowing what they are,

And that it may not be possible to know more than what

They seem to be.

Perhaps the answer is to accept what seems to be.

To whom?

To each individual.

Let’s bring it closer to home.

How?

Tell me that you will try to accept what seems to be, until it seems

To be other than it seems to be, now.

If there is no general consensus on how things are, then how

Can we relate to people with different understandings of

What seems to be?

Dialogue offers an opportunity share our personal understanding

And to learn how others view the same situation.

Others may see something that we do not, and we might share

Something that others have missed.

Of course, even dialogue may still result in our view being

Dismissed by the other, or we may dismiss the other views.

In which case…?

Then we see Life as we see it and let others see it their way.

Case closed?

Case closed.

How we learn who we are

Spirit tells me that we are as individual sparks of Life

Experiencing life.

We learn to know who we are and what we are by

Experiencing relationships with other sparks of Life,

Of intensities that may differ, in some way, or ways,

To our own.

They are, these other sparks, what and whom they have

Become, as are we.

The strengths and weaknesses of other sparks

Provide us with a means of knowing our own, by

Comparing ourselves with others.

This awareness is not meant to be used to judge

Others, nor ourselves. Differences exist and are

As a gift to everyone.

How would it be possible, He asks me, to know

Anything, if nothing or no-one differed, or seemed

Not to,, from anyone or anything else, in any way?

How could we grow? or be aware that we had, or

Had not?

Awareness of differences can serve to inspire each

Of us to become, not as any other, but all that we can,

And in this way, inspire others to do the same,

Not be the same.

We each have a duty to care

Spirit tells me that we each have a sacred duty to care for

The world we live in, the world that sustains us and

Makes it possible for us to experience physical

Existence within a material creation.

Each suggests a personal responsibility.

Yes.

How is it possible for individuals…

Are you speaking of individuals in general or of

Yourself, in particular?

Both.

The answer is the same.

My question is still, how can it be done?

It can only be done individually. We each must learn to

Care about and care for everyone and everything else.

We each may have a different understanding of

What it means to care about and for.

What is your understanding?

I do care about and for whom and what I can.

How much do you care about and for, and

How do you express this care?

Am I on a witness stand?

Everyone is on a witness stand.
