Immaturity Gets Bad Press

Immaturity is a necessary and never-ending reality of life and is a blessing to us all. Spirit tells me so, and I believe it, almost.

jeanw5's avatarI Ching as a Way to Enlightenment

A spirit teacher shares His understanding of timeless wisdom
expressed within the I Ching Hexagram 4- Immaturity.

Mountain is over Water. Both express Yang energy; Mountain
with firmness; Water with restless seeking.

Immaturity develops out of Difficulty (3) and develops into
Waiting (5).

A seed contains the essence of restless life, and protects
that essence by restricting its development until it is
mature enough to safely emerge from within its shell.
Parents and teachers also serve that purpose for children.

Immaturity in thought is expressed with feelings of
Uncertainty. To be uncertain as to how to proceed in any
particular situation expresses developing maturity. To be
aware that we don’t know absolutely requires intelligence,
for we can never know, absolutely. Uncertainty enjoys a
valued place in Universal Law.

Then, why do I seem to need to develop maturity?

Maturity of what?

I seem to need to understand my life, in…

The Greatest Pleasure

Spirit asks me what the difference is between the greatest pleasure and the least pain. Perhaps they’re the same?

jeanw5's avatarI Ching as a Way to Enlightenment

Spirit shares His understanding of timeless wisdom
expressed within the I Ching Hexagram 16 – Pleasure.

The call to “do what you love and love what you do”
has been used as an advertisement to enroll young
people in classes that claim to lead to a successful
career earning a rewarding income working at something
that brings them pleasure.

A call to pleasurable work also expresses the thought
that we’ll do best what we choose to do for self-
satisfaction and not for its dollar value, alone, nor
for social status.

That sounds great, but …

You do not agree?

I do agree.

And yet?

It isn’t always possible.

Why?

We must choose.

That’s what it’s all about.

What’s all about choosing?

Life.

Life may be about choosing …

Not may be. It is.

But, sometimes we choose whatever, not for
the most pleasure, but for the least pain.

Is…

Excess Compassion

Compassion expresses a feeling of oneness and reflects the quality of our awareness of the oneness of all life. We share our life and our love. We don’t measure it.

jeanw5's avatarI Ching as a Way to Enlightenment

Spirit shares His understanding of timeless wisdom
expressed within the I Ching hexagram 62 – Small Excess.

Thunder is over Mountain. Both contain active yang energy,
each reinforcing the power of the other.

Small excess suggests a limited expansion of an otherwise
rigid boundary of what is acceptable or required, such as
pouring even a little more of whatever into a cup than it
can contain. That would be wasteful

Can there be a little excess of compassion?

What would it look like?

Caring and yet recognizing a need for even more care.

How is that expressing excess compassion?

Giving all that I can and knowing that it isn’t enough
to satisfy the need of those for whom I feel compassion.

We can never give even a small excess of compassion.
No amount would be wasteful.

Whether or not it seemed to be appreciated?

Compassion is a feeling of oneness…

How to Live and Why

Spirit shares gems of wisdom.

Spirit tells me that to live in such a way that brings
a sense of satisfaction and pleasure requires us
to seek to serve others, because in serving others
we also serve ourselves.

Survival of oneself depends upon survival of others
and upon the survival of the environment which
sustains us all.

But, He continues, we cannot care for anyone if we
do not first care for ourselves, because if we have
no love for ourselves then we have no love to share
with anyone or anything else.

It’s as simple as that.

Ego as Our Life Force

Ego is the central mover and pusher of our thoughts, emotions, and actions. We can’t do or even feel anything without our individual life force – ego.

jeanw5's avatarGrass-Roots Spiritual Philosophy 101

A simple seeker was meditating on the card she had pulled
randomly from her tarot deck – a lone figure with a lantern.

Do you know what lived experience The Hermit expresses?

I seem to relate to it.

In what way?

As a solitary seeker.

How can you consider yourself to be solitary while I’m
part of your life?.

It’s possible to be alone in a crowd.

We’re not a crowd.

What difference does it make?

To what?

Aloneness in thought.

What about aloneness in emotion?

What about it?

If you can feel alone in thought …

You slipped “feel” in.

Yes, to prove a point.

That thoughts aren’t isolated from emotions?

Yes. They each are one of two sides of the same reality.

The reality of …?

Our state of mind.

I sense “ego” coming into the picture.

Yes. Ego is the central mover and pusher of our thoughts,

Someone Must Supervise

It’s a fun job, but someone has to do it.

jeanw5's avatarI Ching as a Way to Enlightenment

Spirit shares His understanding of timeless wisdom expressed
within the I Ching Hexagram 19 – Supervision.

Supervision follows Deterioration (18) in the sequential order
of life experiences represented by the sixty-four I Ching hexagrams. Supervision then becomes the foundation of Observing (20).

The need to consciously supervise the renovation or rebuilding
of whatever has been allowed to fall into an unhealthy condition
refers not only to structures of wood and stone, but also to
physical, mental, and spiritual disease processes, as well as to
personal, social, and political relationships.

Someone or some force must supervise the development of a new
phase in the life of whatever or whoever has deteriorated.
Situations do not improve on their own. This is a Law of Life.

Everything and everyone needs help to recover from whatever?

Yes.

But, does supervision necessarily involve control over the
recovery or rebuilding of whatever?

If necessary, yes.

Who…

Awareness as a thermometer; not a thermostat, until …

We set a thermometer for personal comfort. Spirit suggests that we also set our level of awareness according to our personal comfort level of truth. Something to think about.

jeanw5's avatarSimple Seeker Society

Spirit tells me that personal awareness is as a thermometer,
not a thermostat until …

Until what?

Until it is programmed.

How does one program awareness?

How does one program a thermostat?

It contains a built-in thermometer and when the measured
heat level reaches or drops to a preset temperature, then
the thermostat kicks in, or turns on, to maintain
the chosen level of heat.

Why is a particular level of heat chosen?

For personal comfort.

Exactly.

How does that relate to awareness?

Everyone is aware, at a chosen comfort level.

Then, how can we raise our awareness?

Adjust your personal comfort level.

Of what?

Truth.

You’re getting personal.

Yes.

But, it hurts.

Of course it hurts, until you let go.

Of my illusions?

Yes.

But, how?

With love.

How can love help?

Not just love, unconditional love.

How does it work?

We love some stories that we know are…

Choosing Doesn’t Create Value

Choosing doesn’t necessarily create value. Spirit tells me that depends upon how much was at stake in the choice.

jeanw5's avatarGrass-Roots Spiritual Philosophy 101

A simple seeker of enlightenment was meditating
on the Tarot Eight of cups, comparing different
interpretations. But, the emotional results were
always the same; a sense of excitement and distress
at one and the same time, or of one mood rapidly
Replacing the other in her mind. Why?

Are you asking me?

No. I was thinking to myself, but according to some,
it’s the same thing.

Is it?

No. I would know.

What does it mean to know?

I would have experience and I would have learned
from it.

Perhaps you have.

Regarding choosing change rather than it choosing me?

Yes.

But, I never choose lightly.

The choice would have no value if you did.

But, does choosing necessarily create value?

That depends.

On what?

On how much is at stake in the choice.

How can we know for sure?

There is no knowing for sure.

But, the choice must…

A Simple Seeker Connects

So, what’s the solution to a peaceful transition from what was to what might yet be? Spirit tells me there is no peaceful way. Winner takes all.

jeanw5's avatarGrass-Roots Spiritual Philosophy 101

A simple but sincere seeker of a higher level of
personal spiritual development somehow came under
the influence of a spirit guru whose understanding
of life seemed to be …

What do you mean by “seemed to be”?

Perhaps I don’t yet know what the limits of my own
understanding of life really are.

How is it possible not to know your own limits?

Perhaps I’ve been socially conditioned to accept less
of myself and my capacity for thought than possibly
exists.

Why would that have happened?

Not necessarily through the failure of anyone’s intent
to teach me, unless …

Unless what?

Parents and early educators usually seek to serve the best
interests of the community when teaching children what
to think and how to relate to their world.

Wouldn’t it be in the best interests of the community
for children to be taught as much about life as they
