Where do Expectations Come From?

Spirit tells me tht we deprive elderly people
of the simple pleasure of self-care when
we do for them what they only require
assistance doing for themselves.

They become the object of our care and then
they begin to lose the sense of self-worth
that self-care allowed them to experience
and express.

What if they are unable, even with assistance,
to care for themselves?

When they are dead?

Not physically dead.

Emotionally?

No. Not that either.

Then?

You’re setting me up.

Yes.

Then, please explain.

Explain what?

I have been a care-giver and have
personally assisted clients with
bathing and home care, but
I have never, as far as I know,
been anyone’s first experience
in receiving paid care from.

What has that to do with anything?

Clients have expectations of what
to expect from paid caregivers.

Where do their expectations
come from?

A social worker would have
assessed their needs and …

How?

By testing their performance level
of activities of daily living.
The results would be recorded
on a scale of from very well
to not at all.

The results of the assessment
would determine what assistance
the person being tested required?

Yes.

Have you ever personally known
any client assessed as requiring
partial assistance cleaning
her kitchen or bathroom?

It’s quicker for the caregiver to do
the job alone and the time she
or he is allotted to any one client
is limited.

Then, the client becomes the job
that is objectified;?

That sounds impersonal.

In today’s so-called health care
system, client care has become
very impersonal.

So, how can we improve it?

We can learn to care.

How?

The only way possible.

Personal experience?

Yes.

Awareness of Reality is Progress

Spirit reads I Ching 53 – Gradual Progress.

Gradual Progress develops from Mountain (53) and moves toward

Marrying (54).

Spirit explains:  Mountains can seem to be as barriers, challenges,

Or as just part of the environment. They can be as beauty, in the eye

Of the beholder, and a pleasure to climb, or as an obstruction

To ignore, if possible.

How we see anything or anyone determines, or at least influences,

To some extent, our relationship with it or with them.

Awareness of this reality is progress along the way of enlightenment.

Where does Marrying fit into this picture?

We commit ourselves to Life, or we do not. It’s as simple as that.

If that is simple.

Yes.

Studying with Spirit

There are times when studying with my Spirit Teacher is less than a

Pleasure. There seems to be such a deep and wide gulf between

The awesome wisdom He would share with me and my shallow

Capacity to absorb it that I must protest.

What do You expect from me? I’m not that bright. Perhaps you want

More than I could ever give.

We know more than you what you are potentially capable of being,

Doing, and giving, and We more than reasonably expect. We know

What we can and what we cannot expect from you or anyone else.

Reaching the Finish Line

Spirit tells me that one purpose of a memoir is to move forward

By looking back, as one might do while climbing a high hill or

Low mountain that, for reasons of our own, must be climbed.

Life itself can seem to be an uphill battle, but we might get

Some satisfaction from looking back and seeing how far

We have come. And, then, with a sense of accomplishment,

Turn again our focus ahead, anticipating the pleasure of

Celebrating a mission accomplished.

Does it ever happen;?

What?

Reaching the finish line.

For whom?

Me.

No.

Beauty and Pleasure express Spiritual Values

Spirit tells me to release my hold on the heavy but

Seductive energies of material values. For me, that

Position is neither desirable nor possible.

I tell Spirit that material comforts surely express

Spiritual values of beauty and pleasure, and that

Perhaps we each must find our own comfort zone

Where our own, individual spiritual and material

Values co-exist in harmony with each other,

Each expressing the other.

Yes, He agrees, as if He expected my response and

Intended to provoke it.

Perhaps, He suggests, I will learn to relax my hold

Without releasing it. Over-simplicity, for the sake of

Simplicity, He tells me, is a trap of false pride.

The middle way is a personal way and, as such is

A different path for every individual.

When to resist temptation, and when not to

Spirit tells me that resisting temptation is, or can be

Habit-forming and a source of self-satisfaction,

Unless we resist temptation solely for the sake of

Resisting temptation, in order to receive

Blessings from Heaven. In such a case, He tells me

(as if I didn’t know), no great benefit would be earned.

Pleasures are or can be blessings to ourselves,

As a token of self-love. And, He tells me, we

Would be incapable of loving anyone or

Anything (for those who might consider God as a

Thing) if we cannot, for whatever reason,

Love ourselves, whom God loves dearly.

Simplicity is different things to different people

Spirit asks me to try to develop

A more simple lifestyle.

What would it look like,

I ask Him.

Simplicity is, He tells me,

But, of course, I already knew,

Different things to different people.

I do, now, live a much more simple

Lifestyle than I would choose to live,

If choosing is all it took. But,

It does seem to require more,

Perhaps a more generous

Spirit teacher?

I tell Spirit that I need pleasure and

Comfort in my life, and, since I am

For now, in a world of matter, then

Why not enjoy it, if I can.

I need pleasure and a certain level

Of comfort. Spirit surprises me

With, So do I.
