A Life Worth Living

A spirit teacher shares gems of wisdom beyond
my capacity to fully understand; simple and yet
deep insights into life, as we each live it,
and how, He tells me,with a little effort
we each might live a life worth living.

Will I be pleased to be asked to share memories
of past experiences, He asks me.

What past experiences?

Your past experiences.

I couldn’t possibly remember them all.

Why?

How would it be possible?

To remember?

Yes.

Reflection.

But, my focus is on what I am experiencing now.

Why?

Because I must choose how to live today.
It’s too late to worry about yesterday.

What about tomorrow?

What about it?

Isn’t that my style of questioning?

Exclusively?

So, you have chosen to adopt a way not your own?

It is my way, once I have adopted it.

Why did you adopt a new response?

It seemed more appropriate to this particular
situation than possible past responses might.

Yes.

What does that mean?

It means that it’s never to late to change
the way we each respond to particular effects.

Effects?

Effects.

As in cause and …

Yes.

Is that the message?

What?

We each choose or at least contribute to
the next cause in whatever endless series
of cause and effect situations are
developing in our life.

Singular?

Singular.

Yes.

Unconditional Love is Always and Never Personal

Spirit tells me that unconditional love
is always and never personal.

Does that mean that to love anyone
unconditionally …

Yes. You must, at the same time,
be required to love everyone
and everything in the same, or
rather, to that same degree.

Wouldn’t it all become blah?

Blah?

Yes, as in nothing special.

Unconditional love is a very special
quality of love.

Would you want me to relate to you
in such a way?

Not at this time.

Why wouldn’t unconditional Love
be appropriate at all times?

It would not be either possible
or appropriate.

Please explain.

What? Unconditional love?

No. I think I understand what
that means.

What is your understanding of
the meaning of unconditional love?

Unconditional love is to love
without conditions required
to receive my love.

Required by whom or what?

How can it go beyond people?

How can that be a condition?

Then our environment is
and must be included in
my unconditional love?

Yes.

Then, the fallen petals or leaves
must be as loved as when
they were …

No. Unconditional loves does not
have a past or future.

It is always in the present?

Yes, an inclusive present.

How can the present include
past and future?

There are no boundaries of time
and place for unconditional love.

Then, unconditional love is always
or never?

Yes.

But, what if I have developed, and
even now am developing, a deeper
sense of the meaning of
unconditional love?

That is as it should be.

But, I didn’t always understand …

Unconditional love does not depend
upon your understanding.

It just is?

Yes.

Note: Dear Readers, This discussion with Spirit
only seems to skim the surface of the topic
of unconditional love, and yet I could feel
myself stepping into intellectual and emotional
waters over my head, for now. If any of you
have thoughts or questions I could present to Spirit
on the subject, then please help me.

Knowing requires Faith

Spirit tells me that knowing is not a matter of faith
and yet there can be no knowing without faith.

What has faith to do with knowing?

How do we learn?

Through experience.

Yes, but not through experience alone.

We reflect on past experience and use what we have
learned from it as a foundation for future …

Future what?

To guide us in our responses to future challenges.

And if what experience has taught you differs from
what others would claim to be the way to live?

This is developing beyond intellectual concepts.

Yes.

Then please explain.

Knowing is awareness

Awareness of what?

Awareness of what seems to be true, for us if for
no other.

Where does faith come in?

We each, in time, develop faith in our own
knowing, or awareness, of our own truth.

I Ching Wisdom – Respect the visions of the timeless past

Spirit explains I Ching 52 – Mountain.

 

Mountain follows Thunder and will be followed by Gradual Progress.

 

As the seasons of our life each follow the one that came before it,

So it is with each new generation of Seekers of the Way. We cannot

Be, see, or do as any other previous one.

 

We each see and understand as no-one else, if we dare to see from

Where we alone are, while respecting the visions of the elders,

Mentors, and teachers from the timeless past.

 

Wow! And the message for me?

 

Yes.

Faith requires letting go.

Spirit’s I Ching reading for today – 44 – Meeting.

 

Meeting develops from Removal and leads to Gathering.

 

How?

 

We cannot move into tomorrow without first leaving today behind us.

We remove ourselves from the past and look forward to gathering

New experiences  and, perhaps, new friends.

 

Life requires faith. We cannot reach out while we are holding on.

 

Holding on to what?

 

Whatever.

 

Letting go is easier said than done.

 

Yes, or it would not require faith.

 

Faith in what?

 

Not what, but whom.

 

Then, faith in whom?

 

Faith in yourself.

 

 

Letting it all go

Spirit tells me to let it all go, since it is going, anyway.

I am two generations behind where today’s action is.

 

I hardly need to be reminded that Life is moving me

Into the past, while young people are moving into

Their future.

 

The world I remember is being swept away, to make

Room for the world of tomorrow, that younger

Generations are creating, without much thought

To what once was.

 

When we have done all that we can, He tells me,

Then we must be content to wish them well, and

Get out of their way.

 

Does that mean that I’m on the way out?

 

We are all on the way out, at least in some way.

 

 

 

Once upon a time – our created past

Spirit tells me that everyone is living a story that we create

As we live it.

 

The past may belong to an earlier chapter in our story, but

Through the magical art of reflection we can reminisce and

Embellish what might otherwise have been considered as

Meaningless or distressful memories.

 

Our creative mind can provide whatever past situation

With a greater depth of glory, pleasure, love, or

Personal satisfaction. We can even adjust facts, or

What we thought were facts at the time, as well as

The level of skills and understanding that we may

Actually remember having achieved during those

Earlier chapters of our story.

 

Why, He asks, do we, and everyone does edit the past?

For many reasons, not least of which is to bolster

Self-esteem, or public esteem, as many leaders

Seem to feel a need to do.

 

You ask me if the past really happened at all?

That, my child, depends upon how politically correct

You want my answer to be.

 

 

 

Memories as snippets of reality in a sea of fiction

Spirit tells me that most, if not all of my memories, that I

Seem to think of as original videos of past events and

Experiences are no more than snippets of reality

Within a sea of fiction.

 

Are you saying that I create or created my memories?

 

Yes, to both questions. We continuously up-date our

Memories of the past, to reflect our current understanding,

Unless we have become trapped within an earlier.,more

Rigid and less developed state of awareness.

 

But, I remember…

 

Yes, but do you also remember remembering whatever and,

If you do, then you will be aware that your current

Understanding has evolved, or it has not.

 

Past and Future Merge in the Present

Spirit tells me that the past and future story of our lives

Merge in the present reality of now. What was is no more.

What will be is not yet.

 

Memories are stories that we tell ourselves, and some others,

In order to explain and, or make sense of the life we have lived.

But, we cannot seem to understand that the life we will yet live

Will be the future of the life that we have already lived. It will

Not be disconnected in any real way from the life we now live.

 

How differently can we expect to live from those elderly people

We now see around us? How differently can our children

Expect to live from the way we live, now, when they are as

We now are? Or, do we believe that we will be in ten years’

Time, as we now are?

 

All the way through life we have had to develop

The ability to adapt to changing circumstances, and to

A changing identity. We were an infant once, and

Then a child. After that we developed, one step at a

Time into the persona we now are. How could we

Expect that change would not continue to alter

The persona we now are into the one we have

Not yet become?

 

So it is, Spirit tells me, with intellectual and emotional

Development, and so it is with spiritual awareness.

We were designed, He tells me, to blend together

Spiritually, as we diversified, one step at a time.

 

 

Our future is calling to us

Spirit tells me that,

As if I didn’t know,

We were not always

As we are, now, but

We must always have had

The potential to become

As we are now, and

If we had, and we did,

The unseen potential

To become as we are

Now, then,

What unseen potential

Do we now have that will

Manifest itself in our future?

 

Then Spirit asks me,

Is our past sending us

To our future, or

 Is our future

Calling to us?
